Not your website, but your data: how Canada is demonstrating what tomorrow’s DMO is all about

A blog for destination marketers and DMO executives who want to know whether ‘AI-ready destination data’ is just hype — or a proven reality.

A tourist is planning a weekend away. She doesn’t open a tourist information website or a search engine. She types into ChatGPT: “What can I do this weekend in our region?” The answer she receives determines where she goes. Not your homepage. Not your campaign. The AI’s response. So the big question for every DMO has become simple: can an AI find, understand and trust your destination? Or does the AI make something up — or worse, mention the neighbouring region that does have its data in order? This sounds like a distant dream. But there is now hard evidence that it is happening right now. And there is one destination that has already built the blueprint: Canada.

The shift: from a visually appealing website to AI-readable data

Brand USA strategist Janette Roush describes the new role of DMOs as “Destination-as-a-Service” (DaaS): your destination data is delivered to the visitor via the AI assistant they already use. The visitor no longer comes to your channel. The figures show just how quickly this is happening:

  • 56% of travellers already use AI when planning a trip (Phocuswright, 2026).
  • ChatGPT asks around 2 million questions every 8 days to DMO websites in order to answer travellers’ queries (SimpleView/Granicus, 2026).
  • ~45% of those AI queries are for individual listing pages: attractions, restaurants, hotels and tours.

In other words: AI systems are already making a massive push into DMO data. The only question is whether that data is ready to be analysed. Roush identifies two key components that every DMO needs:

  1. A verification layer – AI systems check claims with a local authority: the DMO.
  2. Content portability – DMO content in a structured, machine-readable format that AI systems can retrieve via an open API or MCP (Model Context Protocol).

And that fundamentally changes three things:

  • From website to data. AI reads code, not design. Schema.org, JSON-LD and open APIs will become your new homepage.
  • From broadcasting to orchestrating. The DMO is becoming a “destination intelligence layer” that connects transport, events, hospitality, attractions and weather data.
  • From visibility to trust. Those who provide accurate, up-to-date and machine-readable data become the most cited source in AI responses. This is GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation — the new SEO.

That’s a nice story. But does it actually work? To find out, let’s take a look at Canada.

The proof: the Canadian Tourism Data Collective

In 2025, Destination Canada launched the Canadian Tourism Data Collective: the first national platform to bring together more than 230 datasets and 34 billion data rows in a single AI-powered environment. It won the Partnership Award at the international X. Awards. This is not a pilot or a trial. It is a working platform with tangible results:

  • 51,000 active users and 79 subscribing DMOs across Canada.
  • 93% annual partner retention — proof that a data layer helps retain customers.
  • +22% subscribers in 2025 compared with 2024 — growing, not shrinking.
  • Small and rural destinations are given the same support as larger regions. One platform, a fairer playing field.

 The real ingenuity lies not in a single database, but in four product layers that build on one another:

  1. TourismScapes — maps out more than 5,100 destinations: seasonal patterns, employment, assets and the mix of economic activities.
  2. LASR (Traveller Spend) — anonymised, real-time spending data with a forecast covering up to six months ahead.
  3. Traveller Twin AI — static audience segments are transformed into interactive, conversational personas through generative AI. Marketers literally ‘talk’ to their target audience.
  4. Wealth & Well-Being Index — also measures the social, cultural and environmental impact of tourism, not just the financial aspect.

The key lesson from Canada is not the technology. It is the sequence: first you build a shared, reliable data infrastructure; the strategy will then follow naturally. Isolated data silos lead to isolated decisions. A single shared data source leads to coordination across an entire sector.  

And take note of that 93% retention rate. Data infrastructure is sticky: once a DMO has built on it, they won’t switch just like that. That is precisely why this is so valuable for destinations and their technology partners alike.

Even Google Canada is enthusiastic

The model has now been validated at the highest level: in September 2026, Google Canada put the Data Collective in the spotlight as part of a national AI innovation campaign — on TV, in print and online. The platform runs entirely on Google Cloud, using Gemini and Vertex AI. A hyperscaler using your public data layer as a showcase: that is the strongest proof that this approach works. But that is precisely where the important nuance lies for Europe.

The European twist: data belongs in Europe

Canada built its national data layer on an American hyperscaler. For Canada, that is a logical choice. For European destinations, the situation is different. Tourism data is public data. It concerns your businesses, your events, your visitors and — via spending and movement data — ultimately your residents. The question “where is that data stored and who has access to it?” is not a minor detail for a European government, but a key issue. Digital sovereignty and the GDPR are high on the agenda in Europe, and dependence on American cloud providers is being viewed with increasing scepticism. The lesson from Canada is therefore not “build on Google”. The lesson is: build a reliable, AI-readable data layer — and keep that data in Europe. That is not a brake on innovation; it is a head start. A European destination that can demonstrate that its destination data:

  • hosted in Europe, in accordance with European legislation,
  • GDPR-compliant has been implemented, and
  • is, after all, fully AI-readable and machine-accessible,

This DMO has earned the trust of public authorities, businesses and visitors alike. It is that very trust which, in the context of AI-generated responses, makes the difference between ‘being cited’ and ‘being overlooked’. Sovereignty and AI readiness are not opposites. They reinforce one another — provided the infrastructure is designed with a European perspective from the outset.

What this means for your destination

Canada implemented this on a national scale, with a substantial budget. However, the approach can be adapted to any region, province or city. You don’t need to replicate the scale — but you do need to replicate the model:

  • Invest in shared infrastructure, not in an even more attractive website.AI doesn’t read carousels; it reads structured data and metadata.
  • Design for the entire ecosystem. Make your expertise accessible to small local authorities and businesses as well. This will broaden your support base and expand your market.
  • Redefine what constitutes success. Add social, cultural and sustainable value alongside visitor numbers. This is a strong argument when dealing with public authorities and in tendering processes.
  • Build with your users. Iterative development in collaboration with DMOs keeps a platform relevant for years.

 

The common thread: stop thinking in terms of ‘our website’ and start thinking in terms of ‘our AI-ready destination data’. Not (just) a pretty shop window, but a reliable database that any AI assistant, social platform or mapping service can consult. This doesn’t mean the DMO will disappear. But the DMO that merely publishes nice stories will lose ground to the DMO that has its data in order.

Canada shows that this is no gamble. It is a proven model with 51,000 users and a 93% retention rate. The destinations that invest in data infrastructure now will soon become the source that AI systems rely on. The rest will be left behind. The question is not whether you get on board. The question is whether you’ll be there before someone else takes over your role.
