The power of AI in tourism: create the ultimate experience for tourists, but be aware of the impact

The United Nations (UN) has collaborated with Saxion University of Applied Sciences to develop a report entitled: Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Tourism: Key Considerations for Sector Stakeholders. The report provides insight into the opportunities, risks and best practices of using artificial intelligence (AI) in the tourism sector. AI is a powerful technology that can contribute to the ultimate experience for tourists, but it also has a downside.

AI in the tourism sector

AI is increasingly being used in the tourism industry today, but how?

  • Chatbots & virtual assistants help (24/7) answer customer questions and bookings.
  • AI helps analyze customer preferences in travel, hotels and/or recommend activities.
  • Dynamic pricing in flights and hotels automatically adjusted according to supply and demand.
  • Smart hotels with automated check-ins, voice-activated rooms and robotic service.
  • Predictive analytics in booking trends, customer behavior or tourist flows.
  • Writing texts with generative AI.

A promising future

The future of AI is promising, with great potential in the areas of personalization, sustainability, language and culture bridging, integration of physical experiences and improved ethics and transparency.

Through the use of AI, travel can be fully tailored to the needs of the customer. This optimizes the personalization of a booking. In addition, AI can help with better distribution of tourism, reducing overtourism and protecting destinations from it. With real-time translation and cultural adaptation in communication, AI helps in improved language and cultural bridges. Technologies such as AR and VR help integrate physical experiences, such as an on-site city tour. Paying attention to privacy, inclusivity and fair algorithms can help increase ethics and transparency.

In short, AI can help the industry with personalized travel recommendations, automated customer service and predictive analytics tools, among other things, but also raises ethical, legal and societal questions. The UN and Saxion report therefore offers practical recommendations with an emphasis on collaboration, inclusivity, privacy protection and transparency to deploy AI responsibly and effectively.

The ethical aspects of AI

Ethical aspects refer to the considerations involved in using AI in the tourism sector. This includes not only the technical side of AI, but also how it can be used responsibly and fairly, considering transparency, inclusivity, fair dealing, and responsible use.

Privacy protection has to do with how travelers’ personal data is handled. For example, do customers know that when AI is used, their data is automatically analyzed and used? Inclusiveness also plays a big role: how well does AI work in certain languages or for specific target groups? Acting fairly is crucial here. Algorithms should not be biased based on pricing and customer treatment, for example. AI should be used where the tourist experience is enhanced, not undermined or made redundant.

The Role of Event Connectors

Event Connectors already plays a major role in deploying AI in the tourism industry. For example, they use various systems and data streams to put a destination on the map. They do this by linking data with reservation systems, ticketing platforms, accommodations and transportation, for example. In this, AI helps analyze data and gain better insights into visitor behavior and preferences. Event Connectors is a kind of “backbone” that assists AI in collecting up-to-date information and converting it into an improved tourism experience. We also offer an AI Chatbot & AI agent as digital colleagues for your destination. Find out here how an AI chatbot or an AI agent helps your destination, your visitors and your team 24/7.
